A Fan

This fan is part of a collection of lace that I was given by a former student. None of her children were interested in lace and she wanted me to have it because I would be able to share it with other lacemakers. She told me that all the lace had belonged to her aunt who had brought it with her when she left Germany in 1938.

The ecru lace is mounted on black net which has been cut away behind the flowers along the upper edge as you can see in the pictures below. Sequins have been stitched to the lace — the effect when these caught the light must have been stunning.

The large flower near the centre of the fan

The flower at the lower right-hand edge of the fan — notice the little piece of lace that has been added to fill the space between this flower and the fan stick.
